Someone Is Pressuring Me to Have an Abortion
Someone Is Pressuring Me to Have an Abortion. What Are My Rights?

Finding out you’re unexpectedly pregnant can bring a flood of emotions. During this time, you deserve support, compassion, and the freedom to make your own decision. Unfortunately, some women experience pressure from a boyfriend, spouse, parent, family member, or someone else they trust to end their pregnancy.
If that’s happening to you, you’re not alone.
At the Pregnancy Care Clinic, we’ve talked with many women who later shared that they had an abortion because they felt pressured by someone else. If you feel like you’re being pushed into a decision that isn’t truly yours, it’s important to know that your voice matters.
You Have the Right to Make Your Own Pregnancy Decision
In the United States, no one has the legal authority to force you to have an abortion. A partner, spouse, boyfriend, parent, employer, or anyone else cannot legally make this decision for you.
Pressure can take many forms, including:
- Threatening to end a relationship
- Threatening to kick you out of your home
- Withholding financial support
- Intimidation or emotional manipulation
- Driving you to an appointment against your wishes
- Making you feel like you have “no other choice”
When someone uses threats or coercion to pressure you into an abortion, that behavior may have legal consequences depending on the circumstances and state law.
If You’re Under 18
Even if you’re a minor, you still have rights. While some states have laws regarding parental involvement in abortion decisions, no one should threaten, intimidate, or physically force you into a medical procedure against your will.
If you feel unsafe or believe someone is trying to force you into an abortion, seek help from a trusted adult or contact local authorities if you’re in immediate danger.
Worried About Your Job?
Many women worry about losing their job because they’re pregnant. Federal Law protects many workers from pregnancy discrimination, and additional state laws may provide further protections. If you believe you’re being treated unfairly because of your pregnancy, you can learn more by contacting the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC).
